The Apple TV 4K it’s been the same for a really long time now, we haven’t heard about any exciting updates for q while, which in the world of electronics is an eternity. However, according to 9to5Mac, the latest tvOS 14.5 beta mentions support for 120Hz refresh speeds, which no existing Apple TV versions have, implying that Apple is working on a new version of the set-top box, so if you been thinking of changing to any other box maybe this news will make you change your mind. Apple also could use a 120Hz refresh rate with a new Apple TV, and one of the most interesting possibilities is for smoother gameplay, similar to what the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X do with 120Hz support. Apple has recently shown a renewed interest in games, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the upcoming Apple TV had more gaming-related functionality.

In the new beta version of tvOS, several references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz” have been introduced to the PineBoard. PineBoard, like SpringBoard on iPhone and iPad, is the internal name of the device that governs the Apple TV. These citations clearly conclude that Apple is at least exploring a 120Hz mode for Apple TV internally.

It’s worth mentioning however, that even with a firmware upgrade, the new Apple TV 4K doesn’t support 120Hz. Since the current-generation Apple TV has an HDMI 2.0 port, which is limited to 4K resolution at 60Hz, this is the case. An HDMI 2.1 port is expected to support 4K resolution at 120Hz.
